Every two years, TRIXIE employees meet on a voluntary basis and in their free time to work together on a social project. The project group set up for the organization had already started planning in spring 2018. "Colleagues were able to submit suggestions and the choice fell on the Flensburg animal shelter," explains Carina Fürst, project manager for our campaign.
The animal shelter
The "Tierschutzverein Flensburg und Umgebung e.V." was founded in 1940 and today houses more than 20 dogs, over 60 cats and another 15 small animals. With four permanent employees, four trainees and two temporary staff, the shelter relies on volunteers and donations. "It is often not easy to cover the high costs," says Willy Sandvoss, 1st Chairman of the Animal Welfare Association, "For larger structural measures, we simply lack the money and the manpower. Therefore, we were very pleased about the request from TRIXIE."
The project
On June 29, 2018, 48 TRIXIE employees met at the animal shelter in bright summer weather to roll up their sleeves together. Five different stations were on the agenda: the green spaces team was responsible for cleaning, pruning and maintaining the green strips and beds: trimming hedges, pulling weeds, bringing bushes into shape and putting in new plants. The painting team was responsible for giving the exterior walls a fresh coat of paint. The facades, some of which had begun to look gray, were cleaned and primed before a fresh coat of white was applied. Arm strength and stamina were in demand from the gravel work team: the outdoor dog enclosures first had to be cleared and straightened before 20 cubic meters of fresh gravel was filled in and raked smooth.
The cat rooms received a whole new set of equipment from the construction team. Scratching trees, cuddle places and toys from the TRIXIE assortment were built up and placed, cat flaps were installed and outdated items were disposed of. Afterwards, the new dog houses were ready for assembly. Work makes you hungry. So the catering team provided energy and a good mood with delicious snacks and a final barbecue.
The result
"I am totally thrilled with what you have accomplished here today," commented shelter manager Stefan Bargmann during a final tour. And the entire TRIXIE team also looked proudly in the evening at well-tended beds, clean walls, retread dog enclosures and newly equipped cat homes.
The sponsors
"We were very pleased that other companies were also willing to provide services free of charge or to give special prizes," Carina Fürst sums up. Thus the company Jakobsen from Drelsdorf donated 20 cbm gravel and lent wheelbarrows, Veolia provided containers free of charge, DIGA Gerüstbau GmbH & Co. KG from Harrislee lent wooden planks, Ottens Malerei sent over paint at a special price in addition to expert advice and www.hundehütte.biz and the Eiderheim granted discounts on XXL dog kennels. Many thanks for that!
